Domestic And International Cricket Of Pakistan - Is T20 The Future Of Pakistan Cricket?

Written By: Zakir Zaidi

Pakistan Cricket team without any doubt has some of the most competent players in the world, with the best bowling lineup; their batsmen are amongst the top class batsmen in the world even today. Pakistan team is unpredictable when it comes to winning matches, it can defeat top class teams like Australia, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, etc especially when they are about to lose a match. When and how they will fight back no one can tell with their performance. Unfortunately, over the last five years (2005-2010) the performance of the team has declined sharply to such an extent that they lost all the 5 games they played this year against Australia, the table below shows the matches they played, won, lost, etc. Their performance also suffered in the year 2009 where they lost 12 out of 20 marches they played and the worst part is the loss was continuous. We can say that poor form of the players is the reason behind the defeat. Although there are many other reasons but this is the primary one.

Pakistan Team has shown a lot of Talent in the 20 overs format of the game. No other team has been able show that as yet, their winning ratio in T20 matches is 80% as the graph shows. In early 2010 they played 5 matches and won all five, similarly in 2009 out of 11 they won 9 matches. This is because there is a lot of domestic matches played in Pakistan which are of 20 overs. The teams that feature in that tournament are all top class, especially Sialkot Stallions who have been the champions for the last 4 consecutive years. As far as domestic cricket is concerned, apart from the national players, the other players who participate in the tournament are all capable enough to feature in an international event and hold the potential to win it.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Organizes Domestic Tournaments like RBC 20-20, every year this shows that they are showing interest in developing the domestic teams and they should because from these teams they can pick the future talent. Now the question is how can they do this? The answer is that they should organize domestic tournaments at international level, this way the players will get exposure to different conditions and pitches and can help in enhancing their skills. Because of this very reason Pakistani players are the

most demanded in the IPL, because of this very talent every bidder wants to invest their money on Pakistani players such as Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal, Salman Butt, Sohail Tanvir, Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, etc because all of them have featured in the 1st season of the IPL (Indian Premier League) and performed well especially Sohail Tanvir who took 17 wickets in the tournament, and was named Man of the Tournament. He was part of the champions Rajasthan Royals Team. Pakistan team put up a solid performance in the T20 World Cup in England last year and eventually ended up winning the tournament. They played the semi final against South Africa and defeated them and played the final against Sri Lanka. Pakistan won the match by 7 wickets.

Pakistan team’s performance in T20 matches has been outstanding, but at the same time their performance in the 50 over format and the test matches is declining. So with this should we assume that Pakistan holds no future in the 50 over and test match? The answer is no, because currently Pakistan team is going through a bad phase in both these formats that every team goes through at least once. But they are about to exit that phase soon and they will fight back to their full potential. We as fans need to praise them for their good performance and need to believe in their abilities and avoid criticizing them for their poor performance, because if we support them, the player’s confidence will increase and they will start performing well. Pakistan team had many great players to start with; Imran Khan, Saeed Anwar, Amir Sohail, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Moin Khan, Javed Miandad, Inzimam ul Haq, etc . They all have contributed their talents in the sides and have succeeded well so with this history we should not underestimate our side and hope that the players in the team now turn out to be legends like them in the near future.
